Dodging The Limelight

A Facebook friend recently posted this quote from a show he watches, “Madam Secretary,” which spurred me to write today’s blog post:

“In this world of relentless self promotion, we have all been raised to think that the limelight is the only light worth seeking, but that isn’t the case… Achievement is often anonymous. Some of the greatest things have been done by people you have never heard of, quietly dedicating their lives to improving yours.”

It really made me think of some of my painter friends who are really hung up on being “discovered,” becoming well known or even “famous” among their peers.
I’d just like to remind those of you who may be caught up in this notion that your worth is tied to how well known you are, that you are worth so much more than the sum total of your Facebook likes and YouTube subscribers!
Those of you who know me probably know that I’m an introvert…I am really uncomfortable when put into any sort of limelight. Sheesh, it took me this long to finally create a YouTube channel where I’m actually talking to the camera in just a few videos, ha!

I didn’t want to sign up for any team sports or clubs in high school, but when my mom told me I needed to have some school activity for my scholarship applications, I signed up to be on the tech team for the school play, “Oklahoma.”  I got to work behind the scenes, designing, building and painting sets.  I got to be creative without an audience, I wasn’t on stage for performances, and I didn’t take a bow to roaring applause. Nobody in the audience knew I had done anything…it was PERFECT.  I got to see how my behind-the-scenes work enhanced the experience for theater-goers, and that was the icing on the cake!
Sure, I am totally flattered to find out that one of my painting idols has “liked” one of my paintings, just like anyone else, and there is definitely a sense of pride felt when I see my work published in a magazine.  Everyone likes and deserves a little recognition for a job well done!  However, my point is, don’t let it define you, and don’t waste all your energy trying to become more visible among your peers.  Just think of the amazing work you can do by redirecting that energy toward improving your own craft?!  Or better yet, helping others improve theirs? If you’re looking for more gigs, redirect that energy into becoming known by your community and potential clients, and you’ll see a literal payoff.
I like to think that last line of the quote above is me, “quietly dedicating my life to improving yours.”  Since I started painting a couple decades ago, I’ve found the most joy and contentment in helping other painters.  Being that I love design, and I love staying out of the limelight, I started publishing my books to help other artists.  I listen to what my peers are curious about, and I publish e-newsletters and blog posts in an attempt to help.  I’ve hosted countless jams in my home, and I learn something new from my friends every. single. time.  Something awesome happens when you let go of the popularity contests, humble yourself, help others grow and let them help you do the same! (See blog post: “Never Settle for Being the Best!”)  Ironically, it just might lead to that limelight you tried so hard to avoid in the first place. 😉

Now that my books are becoming so well known worldwide, I’m being asked to emerge from my basement studio to teach.  Last week I taught in New Jersey at the Northern NJ Face and Body Art Guild.  It was awesome!  This fall I’ll be teaching at the JAMvention in Belgium.  All of these amazing things are happening not because I’m trying to “get out there.”  God has a path laid out for me, and I’m just trying my best not to let my introvertedness scare me off that path.  😉 My one goal is to follow THAT path, the one that is clearly not laid out by myself because it’s clearly uncomfortable…not the path of comparison or likes or popularity.  And the ironic thing is, I’m finding some people outside the Twin Cities Metro Area actually have heard of me regardless! That’s cool.  Not defining, not the end goal, but kinda cool, and confirmation that you can still go places without a constant stream of self promotion if you are simply doing what you are meant to do.
When it comes down to it, being well known by other painters doesn’t really get you more business.  What really matters for your business is making children smile, creating an experience they will talk about for years, and leaving them wanting more of you.  The average party planning mom has no clue who those famous Facebook and YouTube sensations are in the face and body art world, and they have never heard of the FABATV instructors we gush over at conventions. Remember when you enter a home for a birthday party, YOU are the star! YOU are the big surprise for the birthday boy! YOU are going to transform a little girl into a real princess! So walk in there with all the confidence in the world, like the superhero you are.
Thanks for stopping by, and happy painting!! 🙂

Time Lapse: “Zipped”

Last week was national zipper day!!  So, in honor of this “special” day, I painted a zipper on my hand!  I’ve seen many designs where artists have actually glued a real zipper on the skin, and then had some gory innards in the open zipper which is cool.  I’m not into the gore so didn’t go that route, but I think sometimes leaving out the blood and guts ALMOST makes it just as creepy and more surreal than real! 😉

I put together a YouTube video of course, which you can view by clicking here, or on the video below:

Thanks for stopping by! Happy painting! 🙂

April Happenings at Paintertainment

Well, once again I’ve been posting on Facebook a lot and haven’t kept up on my blog! So, for my blog readers, here are some of the things I’ve been up to lately!

Being that I live in the same state as Prince and drive by Paisley Park every week, I thought I should paint some sort of Prince tribute last week! Here’s what I came up with…

I also had fun creating this colorful entry for a challenge on the FABAIC Forum Facebook page:

(No, I did not paint both hands…this one was mirrored in Photoshop to complete the peace sign!)

I can’t believe I landed third place among all the amazing entries!!  Like my free e-newsletter said this month, I love to enter competitions and challenges just for the creative things they make me paint that I never would have thought to do otherwise!  Getting a win or a even a mention is totally icing on the cake!

This month Illusion is doing a “WOW” themed competition, so this was my entry:

I have been wanting to try the ol’ “hole in the hand” trick for a while now, and finally gave it a try recently. Here’s my attempt, with my hand on my sketchbook:

This was super fun…I’m sure I’ll be trying more of these!
I’ve added a few more fun items to the shop recently as well! This week I’ve added a few large Global rainbow cakes:

These are so super bright!!  I’ve already tried the Positano cake (bottom left) and am in love…you can bet I will be adding more larger split cakes to the store with each new order I make from here on out!

We’ve also added this super cool drippy skull stencil:

You can find it here for $4.00!

Right now I’m busy prepping for my upcoming workshops!!  One week from today I will be traveling to New Jersey to speak at the New Jersey Face and Body Art Guild’s monthly meeting!  I’ll be demonstrating some designs from my “Painting Boys” book, and some other fun boy designs!

The next day, Thursday, March 5th I’ll be offering two half-day workshops.  There’s a ton of great stuff to cover in both workshops! Click here to learn more about the workshops and register for your spot!

Thanks so much for stopping by, and happy painting!! 🙂

Zootopia Face Painting Fun!

We took our boys to see Zootopia this week during spring break, so of course I had to do a little experimenting with some design ideas! There are so many more I could come up with but here’s what I did in the little time I had today.

On the left are a few I did on my PainterTemplates practice sheets…hopefully I can snag a kid later to try them on skin! Judy the bunny I painted on my leg, and my youngest let me try Nick the fox (holding “pawpsicles” of course) on his face! Here are the tools I used:

I love my Alex Hansen pawprint CD stencil and it was great for adding a little texture to the background.  I really like that stencil because it is super sturdy, and I don’t have to worry about my dauber catching on any delicate points and bending it up! I just used a little Mehron INtense Pro powder for the pawprints.

Lowe-Cornell’s 7000C series are my go-to brushes for everything detailed.  Most of the paints here were Paradise, with a little bit of Kryolan and of course some Wolfe black and white.

It’s so fun when new animated movies come out!! I find that I get much more creative ideas for movie themed designs when I’m able to actually attend them, versus just Googling the characters.

May Workshops in New Jersey Now Open!!

I am thrilled to announce that I am now taking registrations for my May workshops in New Jersey! I’ve always had a drive to help my fellow face painters, which is why I’ve published countless blog posts, free e-newsletters and learning resources, and am currently working on my 8th book.  But for the first time in over 20 years of face and body painting I am emerging from my basement studio, and taking my teaching on the road!! 😉  I am so excited to meet some new painty friends in NJ!  On May 4th I will be speaking at the Northern New Jersey Face and Body Art Guild‘s monthly meeting, sharing some fun boy designs!  The next day I have a full day of hands-on learning planned for you.  Read on for descriptions of each class, and links to reserve your spot.  Hope to see you there!

SESSION 1: “Achieving Detail with Speed”
May 5, 2016, 12:30 PM – 4:30 PM
Bella Faccia Studio: 11 Chelsea Drive, Randolph, NJ 07869

Detail and speed CAN exist within the same design when you learn to apply the techniques, tricks and tips taught in this hands-on workshop!

For decades my peers have been asking me, “how can you create such clean, intricate designs so FAST?!” I finally decided to really study myself, comparing how I paint to how others paint, in order to answer this question. After several years of doing so, I have been able to identify many invaluable yet teachable tips, tricks, and techniques that can be applied to any size design.

Attendees of this workshop will be getting an exclusive sneak peek at some of the material that will be published in my next book. Learn how to achieve a great level of detail in your designs without slowing down by getting the most out of your tools, timing and techniques. Use your new super powers to either increase your speed or get more elaborate in your creations!

In this half day workshop I won’t be trying to sell you on gimmicky tools that are good for only a handful of specific designs. Rather, we will be unlocking the massive hidden potential that some of your most common tools posess. Combined with invaluable tips and techniques, you will be amazed at how much they can do for your speed that you never realized!

Space is limited; register TODAY!

SESSION 2: “Realism: Raised vs Recessed”
May 5, 2016, 5:30 PM -9:30 PM
Bella Faccia Studio: 11 Chelsea Drive, Randolph, NJ 07869
Ever wonder how artists can make something appear to pop off the skin, or create the illusion of holes in the body?
Whether you want to create the illusion of 3D objects on your skin or creatures crawling beneath it, this workshop is for you! By learning how to strategically place your highlights and shadows, you can fool the eye into perceiving whatever your imagination can dream up!
In this workshop we will cover some basic principles of lighting, highlights and shadows. We will then focus on how to apply these principles to create realistic illusions of objects being raised above or recessed beneath the surface.
Space is limited; register TODAY!
We have just 12 seats available in each workshop! Purchase a seat in one half-day workshop for $75.00. OR, register for BOTH workshops for $135! By registering for both you not only save $15, but you will receive dinner, as well as a FREE set of wipe-off technique practice sheets. If you plan on attending just one session but would still like dinner, please bring $10 cash to cover your meal.
Thanks so much for stopping by, and I hope to meet you in New Jersey!! Happy painting!! 🙂

More Robot Fun!

This week is spring break, so I took my boys to the local surplus store to get parts to make cardboard robots! We declared it “robot day,” so of course I had to try out a couple more robots on their faces!

This one I really had fun trying out the new HAS “Networx” stencil set for a background that wrapped around the eyes:

…these were all done with a red Starblend and the rest with Mehron INtense Pro powders, applied with lollipop blenders.

My other little guy picked this green and silver robot:

He was extra excited when he saw how the uv green glowed under blacklight!!

Thanks for stopping by, and happy painting!!  🙂
